About Mathematics Department
The Department of Mathematics was established in 1984 under the leadership of Prof. Sunil Lodha, the Ex-Head of the Department. Since its inception, the department has been dedicated to fostering a strong foundation in mathematics among students. Initially, the department offered mathematics courses for First (FY) and Second year undergraduate students. In June 2013, the curriculum was expanded to include the Third-Year (TY) B.Sc. Mathematics program, providing students with a complete undergraduate education in the subject.
The department is committed to creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that supports academic excellence. By offering well-equipped facilities, a rich collection of academic resources, and experienced faculty guidance, the department enhances students’ ability to develop self-learning skills and analytical thinking. With a strong emphasis on conceptual understanding and problem-solving, the Department of Mathematics encourages students to pursue higher education and research in mathematics and related fields. Through its rigorous academic programs and supportive educational framework, the department aims to prepare students for careers in academia, industry, and research.

Mr. Rahul Sahane is conducting ground-breaking research in the field of Graph Energy, a fascinating area of mathematical and computational studies that examines the spectral properties of graphs. Specifically, his research focuses on the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of a graph’s adjacency matrix, a concept that has significant implications in various scientific and applied domains.
Graph energy plays a crucial role in chemistry, physics, and network theory, providing deep insights into the structure and dynamics of complex systems. It serves as a fundamental measure for understanding graph connectivity, stability, and resilience, making it a valuable tool in analysing real-world networks.
Key Research Areas and Applications
- Exploring Different Classes of Graphs – Investigating how various graph structures influence energy distribution.
- Characterizing Graph Energy – Establishing mathematical properties and relationships between spectral parameters.
- Applications in Molecular Chemistry – Studying how graph energy correlates with the stability and reactivity of molecular structures.
- Network Optimization – Applying graph energy concepts to enhance communication and transport networks.
- Algorithmic Analysis – Developing computational models for efficiently calculating graph energy in large datasets.
His research contributes to advancing theoretical mathematics while also offering practical solutions in scientific computing, engineering, and data science.
This pioneering study aligns with the broader academic commitment to interdisciplinary research, reinforcing the importance of mathematical frameworks in solving real-world problems.
